BRIGHT sunshine and temperatures in the high 20s centigrade greeted the opening of the 2013/14 bowling season at the Puerto de la Cruz-based British Games Club in the north of Tenerife on Wednesday, October 2.
Only eight hardy members were present to see Vice-Captain Dawn Rutherford (pictured above) bowl the first wood of the new season.
The start of the season is traditionally a low-key affair as many club members are ‘swallows’ and do not arrive on the island until later in the month.
The new arrivals, together with other seasonal visitors and holidaymakers who help to swell club ranks, will find playing conditions much improved following the re-laying of the artificial grass playing surface of the tennis courts which make up the rinks at the club’s base, Centro Deportivo y de Ocio – more commonly known locally as Alvaro’s – in the El Botanico area of Puerto.
And after the first session, bowlers declared the new rinks to be much improved. The new surface is still bedding in but is already bowling to a true and consistent line.
Returning members are reminded that the first of the new season’s competitions, the Duckworth Cup, gets under way on Friday, November 1.
The 2013/14 season continues until Tuesday, April 29.
