IT was the grudge match of the year, a local derby to rival those epic encounters between City and United, Liverpool and Everton or Barcelona and Real Madrid – it was the British Games Club’s ‘Clash of the Titans’ as the Elves took on the Reindeer in the Tennis section’s annual Christmas tournament.
And a mighty close affair it was, too, with the light and nimble Elves just edging out the fleet-footed Reindeer by 91 fiercely-fought games to 87.
The combatants then repaired to the Mirador del Villa restaurant in La Orotava to chew over the morning’s drama at the day’s main event before doing full justice to a suitably festive three-course lunch.
Later, there was a surprise visit from Santa’s Mexican cousin, Pancho Claus who, despite appearing to be a little the worse for wear, generously handed out presents to all 43 Games Club members present for the occasion.
Although a team contest, there were individual honours, too, with the most games winners as follows: 1 Victoria and Maxine, 2 Ken S, 3 Hara, HG and Lynne.
