THE British Games Club’s annual Burns Night celebrations were a huge success, with a big turnout of members and guests.
Highlight of the evening was the ‘Address to a Haggis’, Burns’s traditional poem of 1786 being recited in most eloquent style by Stuart Lorimer.
After the supper, the rest of the evening was reserved for a mixture of Scottish country dancing and more modern steps, all to music provided by DJ Kevin.
The evening was tinged with sadness, however, as the news filtered through the room that the venue, the Palmeras Playa hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, is to close and its rooms converted into apartments.
The hotel has hosted many of the club’s social functions over the last few years, as well as providing a venue for our regular Quiz Nights.
There was concern also at the news that hotel staff, some of whom have worked there for 20 years or, are to be made redundant.
It seems we will have to find an alternative venue for our social events in future, so watch this space!
