COMPETITION was, as usual, fierce in the extreme for one of the main events on the British Games Club Tennis section calendar, the Jim McColl Trophy.
After six rounds of half-hour doubles matches, Lorna Hamilton was declared the winner by the slender margin of two points. Ken Sheldon was second and Victoria Nielsen third. It was a second triumph in this prestigious competition for Lorna, who also won it back in 2012.
Members then retired to the clubhouse to chew over the mornings events at a curry lunch, beautifully prepared and presented by new host Chio and his team.
After lunch, Lorna received the glass bowl trophy from David Self, a long-time friend of Jim McColl, in whose memory the competition is played.
The President’s Trophy for most improved player of the season, presented by tennis captain Maxine Self, this year went to Ken Sheldon. The destination of the trophy was for the first time decided by a secret ballot of all members.
