AS THE oldest member present, 86-year-old Phil Biggs was given the honour of delivering the first wood of the British Games Club 2016/2017 bowls season.
The opening day is usually only attended by a handful of members but this year numbers were very much up on previous years, which hopefully augers well for the new season. The bulk of the club’s membership are ‘swallows’ and as such will not being to arrive in Tenerife until towards the end of the month.
We hope to be welcoming many new faces among the seasonal visitors and holidaymakers who traditionally help to swell our ranks throughout the October-April season.
New members of all nationalities are always welcome, even if you’ve never bowled before. We offer free taster sessions and free coaching for beginners at the club’s base, the Centro Deportivo y de Ocio, or Alvaro’s Tennis Club as it is better known, in the El Botanico area of Puerto de la Cruz.
Returning members will have little time to adjust to the demands of the new season, with the first competition, the Duckworth Cup, due to start on Friday, November 4.
The bowls section meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Alvaro’s. The draw for the afternoon’s order of play is made at 1.45pm prompt so we ask that everyone is on site in due time so that play can commence at 2pm.
The 2016/17 season will end on Friday, April 28.
