BRIGHT sunshine and temperatures in the high 20s centigrade greeted the opening of the 2013/14 bowling season at the Puerto de la Cruz-based British Games Club in the north of Tenerife on Wednesday, October 2.
Only eight hardy members were present to see Vice-Captain Dawn Rutherford (pictured above) bowl the first wood of the new season.
The start of the season is traditionally a low-key affair as many club members are ‘swallows’ and do not arrive on the island until later in the month.
The new arrivals, together with other seasonal visitors and holidaymakers who help to swell club ranks, will find playing conditions much improved following the re-laying of the artificial grass playing surface of the tennis courts which make up the rinks at the club’s base, Centro Deportivo y de Ocio – more commonly known locally as Alvaro’s – in the El Botanico area of Puerto.
And after the first session, bowlers declared the new rinks to be much improved. The new surface is still bedding in but is already bowling to a true and consistent line.
Returning members are reminded that the first of the new season’s competitions, the Duckworth Cup, gets under way on Friday, November 1.
The 2013/14 season continues until Tuesday, April 29.
THE British Games Club tennis section’s new 2013/14 season begins in earnest on Tuesday, October 1.
Playing sessions will be held twice a week from then on, on Tuesday and Thursdays between 10am and 1pm, until Tuesday April 29 2014, after which sessions revert to one session a week, on Tuesdays, for the duration of the summer.
The tennis section meets at the Centro Deportivo y de Ocio – better known locally as Alvaro’s – in the El Botanico area of Puerto de la Cruz.

Major upgrades and a smart new look for Alvaro’s
BRITISH Games Club tennis and bowls players will return to much-improved playing facilities when their respective new seasons get underway in the autumn.
A substantial investment by Alvaro’s over the summer has seen the three main tennis courts completely resurfaced, while other aspects of the infrastructure have also been spruced up.
Bowls players will need time to adjust to the pace, roll and line of their new ‘rinks’ but tennis players will no doubt be delighted to find a more consistence bounce and no more ‘flat spots’.
All three main courts have been heavily sand-dressed and at the time of writing are beginning to ‘wear in’ nicely.
Initially, summer bowlers found them to be very slow but as the sand has bedded in, so the pace has improved and they should be in tip-top condition by the time the bowls season starts in earnest on October 2.
