A HIGH standard of play was established by members competing for the first trophy of the 2016-2017 British Games Club bowls section season, the Duckworth Cup.
The Duckworth Cup has been played for the last 33 years and is traditionally the first competition of the new bowls season.
This year’s staging saw some of the fiercest competition in the bowls section’s recent history, with each of the semi-finals and the final of this prestigious trophy decided by a single point on the last of the scheduled 14 ends.
This year’s winner was Ray Blair, who edged out Jim Goodman 12-11 in a final that ebbed first one way and then the other.
In the semi-finals, Ray had accounted for former captain Stuart Lorimer, while Jim had beaten Mags Bennett. Both matches went into the last end all square.
Jenni Duckworth, daughter-in-law of former member Jim Duckworth, in whose memory the competition is played, presented the trophy at the traditional Duckworth Cup dinner, this year held at the Petit Los Angeles restaurant in Puerto de la Cruz.
