THERE was the usual level of keen competition for the annual staging of one of the highlights in the British Games Club Tennis section calendar, the Rejoyce/Merton Trophy.
The Black team emerged as winners of the four-team contest despite, as captain Maxine Self pointed out at the presentation, various of the team members complaining of either not being well, only just out of bed after an illness, not knowing whether or not they would be able to run or not having slept very well the night before.
“After all that whinging, they then proceeded to steamroller the opposition,” she said.
The tournament was played in perfect conditions, with bright sunshine all morning and clear blue skies.
The winning team comprised Helena Klement, Ken Sheldon, Nick Garrett, Lorna Hamilton, Monika Voss and Jose de Vera.
The day concluded with an excellent lunch in the clubhouse prepared by Jacobo and Cheo.
And before the day’s activities drew to a close there was time to mark the occasion of Pat Rowe’s 80th birthday in high style with a suitably decorated cake.
