The weather gods looked down kindly on British Games Club members when the tennis section held its annual Elves and Reindeer Christmas tournament.
Following torrential overnight rain, the morning dawned clear, allowing for a prompt 9am start. Despite a light mid-morning shower, play continued uninterrupted until all matches were completed by 1pm.
Then, within a few minutes of play being over, the heavens opened and in no time at all the courts were flooded.
By then, 40 players and guests were safely esconced in the clubhouse and tucking into a celebratory meal ably prepared and presented by Cheo and his team.
The wine and bonhomie were flowing in equal measures by the time Santa made a surprise appearance, distributing gifts to all from a seemingly bottomless sack. Santa’s little helper, Lorna, was on hand to make sure the right gifts went to the right people.
Amidst all this excitement little thought was given to the outcome of the morning’s contest between the Elves and Reindeer, which had drawn to a most exciting conclusion.
The Reindeer had shaded the contest through most of the morning before an overwhelming 17-3 triumph in the last three matches saw the Elves pull victory from the jaws of defeat.
A huge vote of thanks went to captain Maxine for organising such a great day.
