THE 2017/2018 British Games Club bowls season is well underway, with the first competition of the new campaign already completed and the second about to begin.
The first trophy of the season went to bowls secretary Ken Sheldon, who beat Mags Bennett to secure the Jim Duckworth Memorial Cup.
Despite entries being down on last year, the competition nevertheless threw up its usual crop of shock results, with some of the favourites being eliminated in the early rounds.
Mags went one better than last year – when she was knocked out at the semi-final stage – this time secuing a place in the final by beating former captain Stuart Lorimer.
Ken overcame the current captain, David White, to ensure his place in the final and a crack at the only bowls section trophy to elude him.
As is traditional with the Duckworth Cup, the trophy was presented by Jenni Duckworth, daughter-in-law of former member Jim Duckworth, in whose memory the competition is played, at the annual Duckworth Dinner, held at the Petit Los Angeles restaurant in Puerto de la Cruz.
Next up for bowls members is the Pairs Cup.
