SPARE A THOUGHT for British Games Club member Mags Bennett who has appeared in all three bowls finals to be held so far this season – and finished as runner-up in all three.
After losing in the final of the Duckworth Cup to Ken Sheldon, she partnered David Brown in reaching the final of the Pairs Cup, where the duo lost out narrowly, 14-12, to Chris Baker and Stan Coulthard.
Mags then fought her way to the final of the Captain’s Handicap, but it wasn’t going to be a case of third time lucky as she lost, again in a close contest that went right to the wire, to Ronnie Ventilla.
Chris and Stan’s victory in the second major competition of the bowls season, the Pairs Cup, meant that new names were added to the trophy.
After being run as a round-robin competition for several years, this time it reverted to a straightforward knockout.
It was a closely-fought final with fortunes swinging first one way and then the other, before Chris and Stan secured the win on the last of the 14 ends.
It was a similar story in the final of the Captain’s Handicap, with the lead changing hands several times over the 14 ends before Ronnie secured a 15-12 win, again on the last end.
